The strategic planning
directorate was established in 2007 under the office of the
Vice President. The directorate commenced operation in
October 2008 with the engagement of the Director. The
mandates of the directorate at inception were to:

Develop a mechanism for
formulating sub-regional strategy and implementing the
regional integration and development agenda within the NEPAD
FRAMEWORK, and its conversion into operational, sectoral,
regional and national programs.

Develop a detailed
regional strategic plan.

Develop of short/medium
and long term work plan.

Develop a mechanism for
facilitating coordination of the Commission strategic plans
in collaboration with the Commissioners and Directors.
To date the directorate has
produced two strategic documents, the ECOWAS Vision 2020 and
the Regional Strategic Plan (RSP). It is working towards
finalizing a third document, the Regional Medium Term Action
Area (RMTAA).
